This debate got intense.
In response to this question about how we will lower gas prices – both candidates focused on energy independence in different contexts. Obama said that in addition to continuing to drill for natural gas, it’s important to become energy efficient and look into clean energy – solar and wind power and biofuels, in order to compete with countries like China and Germany and create jobs for the future.
Romney focused on energy independence by drilling offshore and allowing coal plants – one of the five prongs of the plan. He also criticized Obama for the increased gas prices that Americans have seen in the past four years, not building a pipeline to Canada, and revoking drilling permits, specifically in North Dakota. “What we don’t need is to have the president keeping us from taking advantage of oil, or coal, or gas,” he said.
