Question 7: Immigration

Romney’s policy on undocumented residents is to stop illegal immigration and give a pathway to children of illegal immigrants to come to the country. He asked the president why he did not put through legislation for immigration – determining who must stay and who must leave – in his administration.

“There are four million people who are waiting in line to get here legally,” Romney said.

There’s more border patrol now, Obama said. He told the audience that Romney supported self-deportation, which would make immigrants so miserable they would want to leave the country, and that Romney said he would veto the DREAM Act.

As for legislation, Obama said that it was difficult for Republicans to support immigration reform when their standard-bearer (meaning Romney) was so against it.

Romney countered, saying that he was too busy licking his wounds from losing to John McCain to be his party’s standard-bearer.
