Debate 1: Domestic Policy / Debate Coverage

Topic two of the economy: the deficit (a.k.a., Romney likes Big Bird)

The issue of the deficit is one that is deeply entrenched, Romney said.

“It’s not just an economic issue, but a moral issue,” Romney said. “It’s not moral for my generation to keep spending more than we take in.”

He wants lower spending and a rate of economic growth.

“You never balance the budget by raising taxes. Spain spends 42% of their economy on government. I don’t want to go down the path of Spain.”

Obama said Romney’s tax cuts would in fact harm the deficit.

“The magnitude of the tax cuts would result in a severe hardship for people but more importantly would not help us grow,” Obama said. “We’re talking about a 30 percent cut in Medicaid over time.”

Students cheered when Obama mentioned college, and wanting to help young people go to college.
